MONDAY, APRIL 12: HIGHEST WIND
Profile America -- Monday, April 12th. Spring often brings somewindy days but rarely anything like that on this date in 1934. Thatday, the observatory at the top of Mount Washington in New Hampshirerecorded an astonishing gust of wind at 231 miles-an-hour -- thehighest ever recorded on the face of the earth. The next year, nature delivered a runner-up as a hurricane hit the Florida Keyswith 200 mile an hour gusts. For comparison, winds in a category F5tornado range up to 318 miles an hour. Chicago is known as the WindyCity, but its average annual wind speed of a little over 10 miles anhour is behind Cheyenne, Wyoming, at nearly 13.
